NORTH KOREA'S NUCLEAR THREATS: A BALANCED PERSPECTIVE TO THE ISSUE, Uwakwe Roland.

It is no longer news that North Korea has conducted series of successful nuclear test, threatening the peace of mankind.
There is a prediction in some quarters that if the actions of the North Korean leader is not checked by the global community that it may eventually lead to a Third World War.

During and after the Cold War there were series of moves by the nuclear powers to destroy and stop the production of nuclear weapons, but all to no avail. In fact during the Cold War we had the SALT 1 and SALT II  and later the IAEA was formed to control the productions of nuclear weapons by nation state, however the activity was thwarted by the so called powerful states in a bid to maintain their hegemony.

International politics is not played on the basis of morality or fair play, at its best , it is the survival of the fittest, this is the reason why all the five permanent members of security council have nuclear weapons and the counties that are respected are the ones with nuclear weapons.
The young leader of North Korea is seeking attention and he knows that the world respects nations with nuclear weapons.
Again,  Russia and China have a soft spot for the young man,  this is why the UN cannot do much, going by the theory of intergovermentalism, member states control activities in any international organization.

The production and test of nuclear weapons is a threat to all of us, that is why I am totally disappointed at our President who made this remark at the UN:
'we don't aspire to have nuclear weapons in the continent of Africa the cradle of mankind,  we will preserve Africa in the case of nuclear armed nations of the world decide to destroy themselves in their so-called mutual assured destruction'
Someone should have told Buhari that the battle of nuclear weapons may even affect undeveloped countries like ours more than developed  societies that have developed necessary intercontinental anti-ballistic Missiles. The leader of North Korea at a point promised that he is going to test one of his nudes in Africa, what will our leaders do.
The best way to stop people like the leader of North Korea is to create an inclusive world,  the UN should be reformed to accommodate emerging powers,  give people a sense of belonging and destroy your own weapons. The world is at the mercy of this young man right now ,  because unlike a democratic country like the US that will require the consent of the Congress to take some actions, the guy can wake up one morning and ask one of his aids to destroy a portion of the earth.
The UN , US,  China and Russia have a lot to do in making sure that we don't experience another global war because we may not recover from it.

THE SILENCE OF OMISSION

Silence means consent, a certain school of thought holds. That means if you fail to speak up against anything wrong, you can be charged with supporting the wrong you failed to speak up about.

The End SARS Protests

I have been quiet since the end sars movement started. Not because I didn’t want to speak but because I was hoping for it to culminate into something tangible and bring about the positive change that a lot of Nigerians desired. I remember having a conversation about it with someone and I prayed that it would not spiral out of control. I wanted a positive change but I wasn’t prepared for the cost of laying down lives because I sensed that it was going to get to that should the protesters expand their agitation to good governance. The powers that be would not surrender without a fight and they have the resources of the government on their side. They would claim that the protesters wanted to topple a “democratically elected” president. And that would make it illegal. And what is democratic about a president who has refused to listen to the cries of the people? In their short memory however, they have forgotten that this same president came into power for the first time in 1985 after a coup...
