THE SILENCE OF OMISSION

Silence means consent, a certain school of thought holds. That means if you fail to speak up against anything wrong, you can be charged with supporting the wrong you failed to speak up about.

This is the stance many veterans have taken in Nollywood and TV broadcasting on the state of immorality in the Nigerian movie industry. An industry that has been accused of glorifying prostitution. The use of nudity in the Nigerian movie industry and sex and the introduction of pornography has seen movies which are more like orgies and the viewers as participating in such orgies.

Acting has taken a new dimension with various degrees of perversion taking over our screens and actresses now being noted for acting out these roles.
Actresses like Mercy Johnson and Tonto Dikeh have become almost stereotyped in these roles.

Omotola who calls herself omosexy is among the actresses who do not shy away from these roles which she calls romantic. What is romantic about acting out the motions of sex or discussing lewd and verbal conversations on sex. That is sex in itself not romance. I suggest she looks up the meaning of romance in the dictionary. And when asked she justifies her actions by telling us she lives in the world of make believe. I honestly think she believes herself.

Other actresses are emulating them. Now it's cool to for a married woman to take off her clothes in a movie or kiss another actor like Omoni Oboli and Iretiola Doyle since nobody seems to have been able to talk them out of this trend. It is becoming increasing common and is getting worse. They defend themselves and shout down anyone willing to correct them. And so they have acquired this trend as the new norm in Nollywood.

People who we look up to in the Nigerian movie and entertainment industry have kept mute on this developing trend with some of them silently consenting to it.

When asked Joke silver she said she could take off her clothes if it was going to teach a lesson. Vivian Anani said if you have it you flaunt it. And these are elders who should know better. With these seeming permission, these nude role actresses have gone loose with all manner of things entertaining only the perverse and irritating the non-conformist few.

Recently Adesuwa Onyenokwe discussed nudity in Nollywood in her new Vlog series. I applaud her courage for standing up to question nudity in Nollywood movies but my question to her is why is it coming too late?

Do we still have role models in Nigeria?

The End SARS Protests

I have been quiet since the end sars movement started. Not because I didn’t want to speak but because I was hoping for it to culminate into something tangible and bring about the positive change that a lot of Nigerians desired. I remember having a conversation about it with someone and I prayed that it would not spiral out of control. I wanted a positive change but I wasn’t prepared for the cost of laying down lives because I sensed that it was going to get to that should the protesters expand their agitation to good governance. The powers that be would not surrender without a fight and they have the resources of the government on their side. They would claim that the protesters wanted to topple a “democratically elected” president. And that would make it illegal. And what is democratic about a president who has refused to listen to the cries of the people? In their short memory however, they have forgotten that this same president came into power for the first time in 1985 after a coup...
