When President Buhari won the 2015 election, the international community, especially countries in the Northern hemisphere welcomed him with all their arms. He was even invited to a major stockholders meeting before he was sworn in as the President, this was to show his acceptance among the leading powers of the world.
However, anybody watching the trend now, will most likely agree that this reputation is falling gradually, first it was a US congress man Mr. Tom Marino, that asked the US government to withhold security assistance to Nigeria until President Muhammadu Buhari demonstrates a “commitment to inclusive government and the most basic tenets of democracy: freedom to assemble and freedom of speech , Marino, in a two-page letter dated September 1, 2016 and addressed to Kerry, said there were a number of warning signs emerging in the Buhari administration that signal “the man who once led Nigeria as a military dictator might be sliding towards former autocratic tendencies”.
Secondly, the fact that his government has not been able to tackle the economic challenges facing the country is a major failure. There are indications from the World Bank that Nigeria is poorer than how it was in 2015, more so there are no policies coming from the former the head of state as to what to do to solve the problem.
Finally, the security situation is worse today than what it used to be as there are a lot of emerging security challenges due to dictatorial tendencies of the president, especially his silence when people from his non-supporting zone are attacked.
